Coalition members, Free Press and OSPIRG, combined forces in the state of Oregon to build a state-based coalition, providing opportunities for media coverage and public education and building relationships with Senate offices. They collaborated on a strong, grassroots media ownership campaign.
On October 18, 2006, OSPIRG and Free Press held a press conference in Portland, OR, which brought together Senator Ron Wyden, local activists, labor leaders, and small business owners to talk about the importance of net neutrality. The event was held at Powell’s Books, a popular independent bookstore, where attendees heard statements from Senator Wyden, Google Representative Alan Davidson, OSPIRG advocate Laura Etherton, and several small business owners. The following day, on October 19, OSPIRG released new release the How Bigger Media Hurts Oregon report and fact sheet.
