The Media and Democracy Coalition is a collaboration of over two dozen local and national organizations committed to amplifying the public's voice in shaping media and telecommunications policy.

Native America

The Media and Democracy Coalition will work in partnership with Native Public Media (NPM), a project of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, to raise awareness and build support for media independence and reform in Indian Country. In addition, NPM will help educate the Media Reform Movement of issues in Native America.

Native Public Media is driven by the mission to promote healthy, engaged, independent Native communities by strengthening and expanding Native American media capacity and by empowering a strong, proud Native American voice.

With Coalition support, NPM will move forward with several strategic agenda items, including advocacy for a Native Desk at the Federal Communications Commission that will further advance telecommunications in Indian Country including Native media ownership and removal of any barriers to such ownership. This “Native Desk” will generate proposals to promote media on Native lands; propose ways for the Commission to set aside spectrum to meet the needs of Native Nations; help Native Nations hold mainstream broadcasters accountable; study Native station ownership; identify ways that the transition to digital technology can serve un-served Native American populations; and assist Native Nations and Native communities in securing new media opportunities.

NPM will also complete a survey of broadband innovations surving Native communities and develop broadband policy recommendations to support broadband deployment in Indian Country.
