2008

The Coalition partnered with the Media Mobilizing Project [1] (MMP) to support two part-time organizers in Philadelphia. MMP, which supports the development of tactical media for economic justice campaigns.  MMP has been organizing its networks to involve local communities in the debates over the future of wireless networks in Philadelphia.

Initially conceived as a digital inclusion effort, Wireless Philadelphia has struggled to deliver on the promise of universal, affordable Internet.  In the summer of 2008, the network's fate became even more uncertain as the Earthlink, the corporate partner, announced its divestment from the project.

In response, MMP, working closely with Coaltion staff Beth McConnell, hosted a public forum on the future of Philadelphia's Wireless Internet Initiative and appeared before City Council to argue for better involvement of affected communities in the deliberations over the system.  MMP continues to advocate for the needs of low-income communities as the city moves forward with its plans to bring wireless Internet to the city.
